Occupy Point
We are unable to occupy a known point at the beginning of this survey, so we will assume an approximate location and direction. During this survey we will observe a combination of known points that were computed from a plan, unknown points that are set in the field, and additional unknown points that will be required for our map. We will later perform a computation to transform the assumed, known and unknown points to positions that best fit points computed from plan KAP14090.
The total station is positioned over a reference mark, and an observation taken to a target on another reference mark to provide an assumed location and orientation.

ATR, or Automatic Target Recognition, allows approximately orienting the instrument toward a target and then allowing the instrument to center precisely on the target after a measurement is triggered.
